5 Successful Creators Give Their BEST Advice
Fear is the mind killer
We don't learn SH!T from our success, but our thousand failures were a thousand ways to learn, PAY ATTENTION and DON'T WORRY.
I actually really needed to hear this today. Thank you
Thank you Jake. I always struggle with this mindset and being too perfectionist and trying to understand all the fundamentals all at once made it really hard for me to see any progress to the point where I stop for 2 months every 3 or 4 months. I really needed to hear this from an artist I really admire and I will start taking it easy and watch myself in the long run... I really appreciate your advice and mantra ❤❤
Inner engineering really helped me become a more cteative
Didnt understand the mantra properly
The big bang is a lie
It's spite that keeps me going.
Most artists fail because they try to make their hobby into their job.
I dont know if i did something wrong, but i couldnt get the drawing.
This is a master class of game delivered in under 30 minutes. Amazing!
Love this!
Why are we talking about motivation when we could be discussing the BEST freehand straight line I have seen. My guy is a human ruler! Great video!! very inspirational!!
Everyday when I wake up, I look at myself in the mirror and tell to myself "You suck and you'll never get anywhere" 🤩
My latest mantra, I came up with: “It was never about quantity vs quality; it’s about analyzing.” I’ve realized I’m very analytical and math-orientated when it comes to drawing. I learn best by memorizing formulas, breaking things down, and taking notes. I realized I level up so much faster from doing one in depth study than 20 sketches. My other mantra lately is “Commit thy way unto the LORD; Trust also in Him; And he shall bring it to pass.” Psalm 37:5
You've Got This - Never Give Up - Drawing is Easy Mutha***ker I was sitting in a hotel bar in Los Angeles with a great friend. I was feeling bad about life and my work. My friend (in his very sarcastic way) said, "Drawing is Easy Mutha***ker!" -- his words have stuck with me a for a long time. It's not that drawing is actually easy... it's that sometimes you just have to "SHOW UP" -- exactly like you said Jake. Cheers!
every person should strive to learn before they die, what they are running from, and to, and why - james thurber
good advice.
Wow, this is powerful stuff!... not just what has been said in the video, but in the comments as well! I may have found my people!!
Love the Warren Beatty quote. It's very apt and hilariously motivating
Hey, heads up, your website link isn't using https at the front. It'll give folks a privacy warning before they'll hit it which might affect your traffic to the site. Love the video!
I am a groundworker, and the only thing that geniunly kept me motivated and feel alive is art. My light at the end of the tunnel. I am practicing to be ready to change industries and finally sweat over something that I am actually caring/enjoying. Anyone out there who's in similar shoes just know that no matter what, always walk towards something that you passionate about as it is your identity and do so when the time is right but never give up!
I try to tell myself that "something is better than nothing," and "It doesn't need to be perfect. Just have fun." Especially when it comes to posting on social media.
My mantra: "These cartoon's aren't going to animate themselves!"
The not day trading on your creativity is so freeing and such a good perspective. My mantra is "embrace the Flow, the Flow is everything"
Listening while sketching, it's so healthy to be reminded that showing up is the goal, and we're creating something from nothing. And that's amazing. My mantra is "sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe sh*t" 😊
❤️❤️❤️Thank you very much Jake! Great video and amazing idea to share the sketch! 🙏🏻👍
Such a good video 💪💪💪🙏🏻
Here's a mantra I came up with, just because I'm not good now doesn't mean I won't be good later, art is a learning experience.
Video games are so much harder. It could take a year or so to make a video game.
The Dream doesn't come any closer. You have to chase after it now. Carlito's Way
Two things from this video that I wanna point out that were extremily valuable advice to me: 1) Scriptment: The idea of having something between a script and a more traditional 'novel' writing is so helpful for comics. I always felt like scripts weren't descriptive enough and with novel writing you could get too caught up with the writing style and character's inner thoughts. With the scriptment you both get a decent amount of description while still getting to the point and you get a good amount of dialogue as well. 2) The story trust: It's so so important to know who to share your story with. Here's something I experienced with one of my stories: In high school I had made this story and had shared it with my other artist friends. They were obsessed with this story to the point where they made their own OCs in my story and made short comics and animatics. It was incredible how well recieved that story was and I could tell it definitely had potential. A few years later when I start college I obviously start talking about that same story to my new group of friends. Except this time they completely destroy every single aspect of the story. At first I didn't understand why they critisized it so much when it had had such success with my other friend group. Now a year later, I know these friends better and I understand they're simply not people I should share my stories with, not because they'e bad friends but simply because they consume art in a different way than I do. They're not artists and they consume content like fast food, to 'turn their brains off', while I make my stories as pieces of art that make you reflect and that have a deeper meaning. I understand now that no story will ever please everyone and that I need to share my stories with people who are capable of giving critiques for the type of stories I'm making.
That work of Art you did is perfect. It fits exactly how I see myself only difference is that its a fiery dragon, but only because I am 44 now and have decided to take on my true life back with purpose instead of living a sedentary life where I never had to work and everything was given to me. The difference was I was existing but I wasn't really living. Life in full of ups and downs, challenges and excitement, most of all it is life has things worth fighting for.
I'm quite late to this video, but loved the message. I will admit that, as a musician (and I realise you're not necessarily talking to me), I am struggling to think of a way to connect with my audience: many watch IG, TT or even YT with the sound off (?!) and to go down the physical route - I don't know many people who have a tape, CD, or record player. Of course the inevitable conclusion, and one that I find myself arriving at, is that maybe I'm just no good.
Amazing video, some really good insight. I dont agree very much with the rule of thirds. I have seen many people including myself that break that rule. You cant always be winning and getting better. But you can always failing and getting better; that's called being a perfectionist. Trying to make something every day is good advice but can get tricky for longer projects. You can let yourself off the hook for fubing a drawing that you only planned to work on for one day. But spending a whole day painting only to realize you have to throw it all away for the 3rd day in a row after 30 days of work is a much harder thing to wrap your head around.
Clever girl....AAAAHHHRRRGG!!!
For me my mantra when it comes to creating, or doing exercises or anything outside of work is: ''show-up''. I find that it's the hardest for me when it comes to things outside of my work where I don't have any other responsibility than myself. Because then, once I am set in front of my desk, or in my jog pants for exercises, once everything is ready, I just start and then the flow start to kick in. And if nothing spectacular comes out of it, it's ok, it's part of the process. When it comes to work, or anything that has a scope of responsibility that doesn't exclusively include myself, I generally have a less harder time, because I know that people count on me, that I have a commitment to honor. And on the harder days when it's hard to find motivation, I am a firm believer that -> ''if you don't do it for yourself today, at least do it for your teammates, for the client, for the peoples who relies on you to show-up''.
Pre ordered half way through. Super excited. Great interview on both ends. Going to subscribe so I’m now connected to both of you guys in some way to see what you create in the future :) 🤙
Aye man thanks a lot!
You don't know sh*t about the numeric artists and their work with AI, you're afraid of modernity, afraid of new coming things, you're like those idiots whot wanted to fight CGIs in the films, the ones who wanted to fight graphic engines in the video games, the ones who want to live like Amish... but you can't stop progress... People like you never did, and you'll never will The title of your video with 1 extra word... "AI"... It would be more honest to say "Join the Fight Against Art!" because what you really try to do is to fight art... And you can try, and we'll watch you sink, because you'll fail, and then you'll see the world evolve, from the border of the road you threw yourself to We'll drive past you and laugh at you
How close can your analogy come to the truth of the Creator, yet you miss it entirely? The point of your story being that artists create something from nothing, and that is a miracle, and not conclude that, in like manner, GOD is the artist of creation?
The main thing holding me back is money. If I had 1 million dollars dumped into my bank account then I could make all my comic books come true.
Loved this conversation! Awesome content. New sub ❤️
I actually had a project, a video game hack and while I was able to sell it with some success at some conventions, really what you want is a product to sell to the masses. You want to sell not 1-5 copies, but 1,000-5,000 copies of whatever you make and the more you sell the better.
The main problem with me was that, I'm confident that I'm the next Akira Toriyama, but its different when you don't have the skill set as a story board comic artist. I'm an artist and character designer, but my skills are lacking when it comes to story boarding. Without the artwork then nobody will buy the comic. My comic would look like garbage, so I have to hire an artist to draw my comic. I can design the characters, I can write the script and can tell the story, but I have to hire someone to do the artwork. This is different when you have the skills to draw anything you can imagine.
I think with artwork its a bit more flexible. I did create a video game and I must say, I combed over it with a fine tooth comb before I released it and while I may have been a bit of a perfectionist, the game......... well I have no personal revisions for it. So I'm happy with it. I think for a monthly comic, if there is something not perfect, its more like, its okay that it wasn't perfect.
About to watch this. Thanks

The only thing we know for certain about the creative process is that it requires someone to create. The methods change from person to person, but there is always someone in the chair, whether that's in-front of a piece of paper or in-front of the universe. Seek truth friends, nothing comes from nothing <3
My method for writing a story is, come up with something interesting, but it also has to make sense. Like cool expositions and fights are neat, but there has to be a reason for everything to happen. As long as you can tell a logical story, that is important to me.
